Emergency Plumbing in Knoxville
Request an emergency plumbing estimate
Emergency plumbing covers the problems that cannot wait for next week. A pipe splits in the crawl space, a water heater starts leaking from the bottom, or sewage comes up through a tub drain. Each one can damage floors, walls and framing within hours, and that kind of damage lowers what a house is worth when it is time to sell.
Faucetleak Plumbing is a referral service. We do not send out plumbers of our own. When you request an estimate or call, we connect you with an independent local plumbing provider in our network who handles emergency repairs. That provider looks at the problem, explains what failed and gives you a price. You decide whether to go ahead. The steps on this page show what you can safely do while you wait and where to stop.
Water Running Right Now? Do This First
Go straight to the main shutoff valve and close it. Turn a round handle clockwise until it stops, or turn a lever a quarter turn so it sits across the pipe. If the leak is at one fixture, the small stop valve under that sink or behind that toilet may be enough.
If water is near outlets, a panel or plugged-in appliances, stay out of it. Shut the breaker only when you can reach the panel while standing somewhere dry.
Is This an Emergency or Can It Wait?
Some problems need help today. Others can wait for a regular appointment. Here is a simple way to sort them.
Treat these as urgent
- A pipe that burst or split, inside a wall or out
- Water coming through a ceiling or pooling on a floor
- A water heater leaking from the tank itself
- Sewage backing up into a tub, shower or floor drain
- No water at all in the house
- A smell of gas near a gas water heater
These can usually wait a day
A dripping faucet, a running toilet or one slow sink is annoying, but it will not wreck a floor overnight. Shut off the stop valve if you need to and book a regular visit.
Why Waiting Costs More
Water travels. It wicks into drywall, soaks subfloor and settles into the soil of a crawl space. Within a day or two, mold can start, and wood floors can cup or swell. Each of those adds a second repair on top of the plumbing fix.
That second repair is what hurts home value. Stained ceilings, soft floors and musty crawl spaces show up on inspection reports years later. Getting the leak fixed fast keeps the damage list short.
What You Can Safely Handle Yourself
- Close the main or the fixture stop valve
- Open a faucet on the bottom floor to drain the lines
- Catch drips with buckets and move rugs, boxes and furniture
- Run fans and open windows if the weather allows
- Take photos and short videos of the water and the source
Stop there. Cutting out a section of pipe, soldering, or working on a gas water heater is a job for a licensed plumber.
What an Emergency Plumber Does on Arrival
A provider usually starts by confirming the water is off and finding the source. They may open a small section of drywall to see a hidden pipe. Then they explain what failed, what it will take to fix it, and what it will cost before they start. On many calls the fix is a short pipe section, a new fitting or a replaced valve.
Burst and Frozen Pipes
Pipes in crawl spaces, garages and outside walls are the most likely to freeze during a rare ice storm or a long cold snap. If a pipe is frozen and has not split, open the faucet it feeds and warm the pipe slowly with a hair dryer. Never use an open flame. If you see a bulge or a crack, keep the water off and leave it for a provider.
Older homes with galvanized steel pipes can also fail with no freeze at all. Rust thins the wall of the pipe until a joint gives way. A provider can tell you whether a single repair makes sense or whether more of the line is near the end of its life.
Water Heater Trouble
A tank leaking from the bottom usually means it is done. Shut the cold water valve on top of the heater. For a gas unit, turn the control knob to the pilot or off setting. For an electric unit, switch off its breaker. If water is coming from the relief valve on the side, the tank may be overheating, so have a provider check it before you turn it back on.
Picking a Provider for an Emergency Job
Ask a few plain questions before work starts:
- Are you licensed and insured for plumbing in this area?
- What is the trip or service fee, and what does it include?
- Can I get the price in writing before you begin?
- Will you show me the failed part when you are done?
A provider who answers clearly and puts the quote in writing is easier to trust with a job inside your walls.
After the Leak Is Fixed
Keep the invoice and your photos together. They help with any insurance claim and show a future buyer that the problem was handled properly. Some policies may cover sudden damage, so check your policy and ask your agent. Dry out the area fully before closing walls or laying new flooring, and look at the spot again after a week for any new staining.

What Emergency Plumbing May Cost
Prices vary by job, home and how much of the pipe needs work. These are typical U.S. ranges only. Ask the provider for a written quote before any work begins, and ask whether an after-hours fee applies.
| Job | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency service visit | $150 to $500 | Often covers the trip and first hour |
| Burst pipe repair | $200 to $1,500 | Higher if a wall or ceiling must be opened |
| Frozen pipe thaw and repair | $200 to $1,000 | Depends on access and any splits |
| Water heater replacement | $1,200 to $3,500 | Tank size and fuel type change the price |
| Main shutoff valve replacement | $300 to $900 | Older valves often seize and need replacing |
| Slab leak repair | $1,500 to $4,500 | Rerouting the line may cost less than breaking concrete |

No obligationEmergency Plumbing FAQ
What counts as a plumbing emergency?
Anything that is putting water where it does not belong and will not stop on its own. That includes a burst pipe, a leaking water heater tank, sewage backing up into the house, and having no water at all. A dripping faucet or running toilet can usually wait.
Should I turn off the water heater if a pipe bursts?
If you have shut off the main water, it is a good idea. For a gas heater, set the control to pilot or off. For an electric heater, switch off its breaker so it does not run while the tank drains.
Can a burst pipe in an older house be patched?
Sometimes. A provider can often replace a short section. If the rest of the galvanized or cast iron line is badly corroded, they may suggest replacing more of it so you do not face the same leak again.
